Mastering Your Essay Writing Skills: General Rules To Be Observed

When you are writing a paper, you need to include an outline. Remember that your final paper will only be as good as the outline that you create.

  • The first step in writing a good outline is to write out the introduction at the top of the page you are using. This should be an expanded version of your thesis statement, big enough to fill a paragraph. Make sure that the thesis statement matches all of the material that you have gathered too.
  • Beneath the introduction is where you place your headings. Start with the first heading and put any corresponding subheadings beneath that. For example: if you have three key points you are presenting in the body of your paper, you will want three headings for each of the points. Beneath each of the points you will want a number of bullets or subheadings for each of evidences you are presenting.
  • You can take note cards from your research part of the writing and use them to figure out the order in which you want to present the information in your essay.
  • Once this is done you want to outline your conclusion and what you are going to say.
  • You want to make sure that your examples are effective by supplying supporting evidence.
  • Make sure your introduction is top notch. All good essays need an even better introduction. Your introduction is where you grab the attention of your reader. You might want to do that by presenting a startling fact that relates to your topic right off the bat, or providing them with an interesting story that keeps them reading. Try and be brief but creative.
  • If you are unsure of what topic to select, you can take some time to brainstorm. Try a free write or mind mapping exercise. Look over your course notes thus far or review the headings and subheadings in your assigned text. These can all make for great topics for your paper. If that does not suffice, ask your teacher for any recommendations they might have.
  • If you fail to edit or proofread, your teacher will take that a sign that you don’t care enough about your grade to work on edits.
  • Once that is done, you can congratulate yourself for a job well done.
